Rather than using fluorescence to detect evidence, as you would with an Alternate Light Source, The RidgeScope™ is a Reflective Ultraviolet Imaging System RUVIS, which uses intensified UV reflectance to visualize evidence. Reflective Ultraviolet Imaging Systems have become an integral part of the crime scene investigator’s search for evidence. By viewing shortwave UV reflectance through the RidgeScope™, the system can detect fingerprints on most non-porous surfaces before any treatment or enhancement has been applied. The RidgeScope™ allows you to quickly scan a crime scene for evidence such as fingerprints, shoe impressions on tile or other smooth surfaces, explosive residues and bite marks. Latent print collection can be performed on surfaces such as plastic bags, the adhesive side of tape, glossy magazines, photographs, linoleum tile, compact discs and credit cards. Cyanoacrylate treatment will further enhance the results of the RidgeScope™.
RidgeScope™ RUVIS Applications:
As with any RUVIS system, the two main applications are visualization of untreated latent prints on most non-porous surfaces and cyanoacrylate CA fumed prints. Untreated oily latent prints show as strong black ridges on shiny backgrounds. Untreated sweaty prints show as white reflective ridges on a black background. CA fumed prints look very sharp, as shiny prints green in eyepiece on a black background.
RidgeScope™ Contents:
The RidgeScope™ includes a 60mm UV Quartz lens and image intensifier for manual viewing or use with a film or digital camera, allowing you to photograph latent prints before beginning processing and collection. An adjustable eyepiece is included for comfortable viewing and eye protection. A 35mm lens attachment is provided to fit the RidgeScope™ to most SLR cameras. An assortment of rulers is also included with the RidgeScope™ for reference during photography.
This kit also includes a 12-volt, 254nm shortwave ultraviolet lamp to generate the ultraviolet light that illuminates the latent prints. The lamp has a convenient hand strap and grip for easy maneuvering. A rechargeable 12V-7A.h battery and charger allow the light to be used anywhere in the scene without the worry of dragging cords across potential evidence. An auto adapter is also available, for charging the battery from your car’s cigarette lighter. The unit includes a stand see above photo for quick photography or for use as a handle when scanning across a crime scene.
Because RUVIS technology uses shortwave ultraviolet light, proper safety is a concern. The RidgeScope™ includes a pair of UV-absorbing goggles. A Tyvek ® lab coat or other protective clothing that covers the skin should always be used.
The RidgeScope™ kit comes in a rugged, Pelican™ carrying case that fits easy into the trunk of a car and protects the unit from damage during transport.
