Students will use restriction enzymes to digest the DNA of four suspects in a criminal investigation and then separate the DNA samples using agarose electrophoresis. Once they have completed the DNA analysis, they will compare the banding patterns for each suspect’s DNA to a sample found at the crime scene in an attempt to identify the true criminal. The activity can be completed in two 90 minute lab sessions. It comes with enough materials to run eight gels, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster. An agarose electrophoresis chamber, power supply, incubator or water bath, and 2–15 mL micropipets, required, are available separately. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials.
